Project365 141: Infrared Plate - My First Attempts

For my birthday I was given a Hoya R72 Infrared Filter; I have no idea how they knew I wanted one. Maybe they discovered the printouts of the product page from Vistek I kept misplacing around the house. ;-) Their price is excellent, so if you want one yourself buy it from them.

Below are four of my first attempts. Because the filter is so dark, the camera needs to be on a tripod. Most of these exposures are in the 10 second range, and it was a bright day! The camera's auto exposure is pretty useless. It seems to have no idea what to do. So these are all shot in manual mode. I took a bracketed series of exposures and then picked the one I liked best. I also tried some HDR merges of some of the sequences, but that did turn out well; that technique will need some practice.

Vegetation is very infrared reflective so comes through as a white. The skies tend to be dark. As the leaves on the trees grow into their full summer size they will become more prominent.

My favourite for the day is the last one - Plate 4. The broken of tree really seems to fit the brooding mood.

Project365 140: Reflecting Pool

I saw this reflecting pool the other day when I was out and about, but there was a big event tent the obstructed the background. Today it was gone, decent light and a quiet breeze. Unfortunately the flame is not very visible.

The city lay under a heavy blanket of fog this morning. Fog of course is water so it fits well with my theme; a good thing I didn't choose a sun theme, yes? Out of the many discoveries during my early morning walk, I narrowed it down to six images to share, but "Train to the Clouds" is my pick of the day.

I had a hard time picking today's image because there were several I liked. I ultimately choose this one of a couple enjoying time together in the rain rather than rain drops on the tulips, or people with funky umbrellas.
