White Goose at Mill Pond

The local town pool is a good place to try to grab water fowl. They are used to having people around so are not too bothered by your presence. Nonetheless still shot at 300mm and then cropped just a bit.

Cranes in Flight

These are Sandhill cranes near Sault St Marie. They don't like it when you get too close.

Duck, Duck, Duck ...

The Long and Winding Road

We spent eight hours on this road, but only got half-way into the park. Not all of it was like this, however. This is also in the Polychrome mountains. The drop-off shown in the picture looks rather gentle, but people scared of heights had problems going near the edge.
This is the tenth of my best ten images from 2008 as chosen by my Facebook friends.

The Polychrome Mountains

This group of peaks is so named because of the many bands of colour in the rock. This is a really gorgeous part of Denali park.

Mount McKinley

This is the top 7,000 feet of the highest mountain in North America. We were supposed to land on a glacier but could not due to the cloud cover. Instead we flew around the peak numerous times. The massive size of this mountain cannot be captured in such a picutre. The image was taken from about 18 Kms away from the peak. This image is about 9kms wide in coverage.

Coyote

This young guy was also at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. He is rather scruffy looking. He had a partner who had a gorgeous fur coat, but she was way too shy.

Eagle

Taken at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. This was a captive bird so it was easy to get real close.

Moth on Daisy

Taken at a park near my home. The blue body of this moth is a wonderful compliment to the yellow of the daisy. Number 4 from 2008.

No So Wild Horses

Number 2 from 2008. I like to make images of horses, but it is something I need some practice at. Now that spring is here I have on my to-do list to find some colts.

East of Union

Sorry for the unannounced hiatus. I had a little trouble with my photoblogging software, and then went on vacation.

Back from the edge

On our second last day, I was up before sunrise - which wasn't all that early. I was making some coffee when I noticed that the sun had found it's way thorugh a slit at the horizon. It was flooding this winter wonderland with a gorgeous warm light. The coffee could wait. I gran my bag and ran outside to try to quickly revist as many places as I could before the light was lost. In the end I had 30 minutes. Of course I went to this house again.

Abandoned at the edge of nowhere

This old house has the redeeming quality of character. Unfortunately the light I had to work with had no redeeming qualities at all! They sky was completely and uniformly overcast. Nonetheless it reinforces the idea of being on the edge of nothing.

Lemonade

No doubt you are wondering about the title - Lemonade? This scene is the dead of winter in Saskatchewan -18C ! The few days I had to shoot were overcast with a very flat and dull light. I shot anyhow, but when it came to processing I tried to spice it up by adding some noise that made it look like a grainy old photo. I like the result. Do you? When handed a bowl of lemons, make lemonade.

Lazy Summar Afternoon

I am near the end of my top phot0s of 2007. I have a four left - all black and white. I thought I'd show them as a group. We had rented a cottage for a few days in Haliburton. I would like to go back there sometime. We had a bit of rain, the sun had come out and the sky was beginning to clear.

Aubrey Falls

I didn't come prepared to do a water falls shot. No tripod and not all of my filters. It was supposed to be a vacation with the wife - not the camera. Pretty pleased nonetheless with the way it worked out. I think Barb enjoyed helping.

I know it's not Fall

Friends of ours invited us up to their cottage for a weekend in the fall of 2007. Barb and I went for a photo walk on a sunny Autumn day. The sun was streaming through the canopy to illuminate this cluster of leaves and made the colours really pop.

The Meeting

They descended upon the earth. It was a neutral territory for them all. A peaceful settlement was negotiated and our corner of the universe was saved from certain destruction.

From Death Springs New Life

Taken north of Thessalon. A large area of forest had been burnt some year prior. Life is beginning to return.
